Hyundai Motor India is going to take a strong step to make its cars more powerful and fuel efficient in the coming years. According to a recent report, the company is developing an all-new 1.2-liter turbocharged GDI (Gasoline Direct Injection) engine in India, which will play an important role in their future hybrid and compact crossover models.

Why is this engine special?
This new four-cylinder turbo petrol engine will not only be better in terms of performance, but it will also match perfectly with the electrified architecture. The company now aims to bring multi-powertrain options into the mainstream along with conventional engine options, and this new engine is considered to be a big step in that direction.
In which car will it be seen first?
According to reports, this new engine will first be seen in Hyundai’s new crossover car Bayon. Bayon can be launched in India in the second half of 2026. This car will be positioned above Hyundai’s premium i20, but will not replace it.

Hyundai plans to equip many of its existing cars with hybrid powertrain in the coming time. Although the company has not confirmed any timeline on this, but according to sources, the new generation Creta and Palisade will be connected to this powertrain first. Due to the larger size of the Palisade, it can possibly be given an even more powerful engine.
What can be special in transmission?
With this new engine, the company can give the option of DCT (Dual Clutch Transmission) or e-CVT (Electronically Controlled CVT) transmission, which will make its driving experience more smooth and efficient. The engine is being prepared to suit strict emission norms like CAFE 3 and BS7, which will make it according to future needs.

With the GST rate on hybrid vehicles in India remaining stable, the company is focusing on manufacturing this new engine in a cost-effective and fully localized manner. This will not only keep its price under control but will also be a strong initiative towards Make in India in India.
Hyundai can also introduce many new models in India with this new engine. Bayon will be its first face, after which this engine will be used in other hybrid cars. In such a situation, if you are thinking of buying a powerful, fuel efficient and technology-equipped car in the coming time, then Hyundai’s new range is definitely worth looking at.
This move of Hyundai clearly shows that the company is not only expanding its portfolio in India, but is also focusing on sustainable and smart vehicles keeping in mind the needs of the future. The new 1.2L turbo petrol engine is going to be an important part of this strategy – which will offer a great balance between performance, mileage and price.
