Maruti Suzuki’s domestic sales have seen a sharp decline in June 2025. India’s largest carmaker sold a total of 1,18,906 units this month, as against 1,37,160 units in the same month last year. That is, a decline of about 13% has been registered.
But even amid this falling sales, one vehicle surprised everyone, Maruti Suzuki Ciaz. This sedan, which is at the end of its life cycle, sold 1,028 units in June 2025, which is almost double as compared to June 2024 (572 units).

Biggest decline in small car segment
At the same time, the company’s mini and sub-compact segment – which includes cars like Alto, S-Presso, WagonR, Swift, Baleno, Dzire, Ignis and Celerio, registered a huge decline. In this segment, 60,591 units were sold in June 2025, while this figure was 73,444 units in the same month last year. That is, a decline of about 17%.

SUVs and MPVs also could not escape
Maruti’s UV portfolio, which includes Brezza, Ertiga, Fronx, Grand Vitara, Jimny, Invicto and XL6 – also sold only 47,947 units in June 2025, which is about 8.4% less than 52,373 units in June last year.
Why are sales declining?
Maruti’s senior executive Rahul Bharti told PTI that this decline in sales is mainly due to a sharp decline in demand for small cars. He said, “GDP is growing at the rate of 6.5%, but the passenger vehicle market is almost flat. The reason for this is that what was once the mass-segment, i.e. small cars, are no longer participating in the growth. This is completely an issue of affordability.”

Decline in April-June quarter too
Not only in June, Maruti’s domestic sales also declined to 3,93,572 units in the quarter from April to June 2025, whereas in the same period last year the company had sold 4,19,114 units.
Continuous decline in car sales, sluggish pace of SUV segment and affordability issue together have given a blow to Maruti’s sales. Only one or two vehicles like Ciaz have given some relief, but the company is now hoping for a change at the policy level.
