Xiaomi has once again rocked the electric car market. This time the company’s new all-electric SUV – YU7 is in the news, which has seen tremendous enthusiasm among customers. According to Xiaomi, the vehicle Received 2.89 lakh bookings within just one hour of its launch and this figure is believed to be one of the fastest bookings ever in the EV segment.

According to a Reuters report, Xiaomi has priced the YU7 so thoughtfully that it directly clashes with the Tesla Model Y, which was China’s best-selling EV in 2024. The starting price of the YU7 has been kept at around 2.53 lakh yuan (about $34,800 USD or ₹29 lakh INR). At this price point, it becomes the perfect choice for those who want style, performance and technology but also keep an eye on the budget.

This new model from Xiaomi is not only premium in appearance, but its features and performance also compete with high-end brands in the SUV segment. It is equipped with HyperEngine V6s Plus, which is Xiaomi’s most advanced electric motor setup till date. In the dual motor variant, it gives 690 horsepower, and takes the car from 0 to 100 km/h in just 3.23 seconds. Its top speed goes up to 253 km/h, which brings it into the premium class of performance SUVs.

The company had given two options for pre-booking – a refundable deposit of 5,000 yuan ($690 USD or ₹58,000 INR), and a non-refundable “priority delivery” option of 20,000 yuan ($2,750 USD or ₹2.3 lakh INR). Priority slots on Xiaomi’s app were filled in a few hours, which shows the intensity of demand.

Xiaomi’s Beijing-based Super Factory is handling the responsibility of manufacturing this SUV. Here 381 robots and only 20 humans are making one car every 76 seconds. The company claims that this process is three times faster than traditional factories. This factory has also produced SU7 earlier.

The SU7 electric sedan launched earlier had to face criticism for delay in delivery and safety concerns. But Xiaomi CEO Lei Jun did not repeat any mistake this time. The launch of YU7 seems to be more planned, sharp and customer centric than before.

As expected, with high demand, incidents of scalping also came to the fore. According to reports, some users started selling their pre-order slots on platforms like Xianyu. To control this, Xiaomi limited each buyer to a maximum of two units.

After the success of SU7, experts are also very positive about YU7. Ford CEO Jim Farley himself publicly praised SU7 and said that he does not want to leave it. Now it remains to be seen how much YU7 impresses him.
